Louvre Palace
The largest palace in Europe, royal residence under the Old Regime before being abandoned in favor of Versailles, had been declared national museum during the Revolution.
The First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte made it the most prestigious museum in the world by the magnitude and quality of its collections
They gather, around the old royal collections and property seized from the Church and emigrants, countless spoils of war.
Their selection was entrusted to the Director-General appointed by Napoleon: Dominique Vivant Denon.
